About Us

What are NEC contracts?

The NEC is a suite of industry standard forms of contract published by the Institution of Civil Engineers. Launched in 1993 NEC contracts are now in their fourth edition (NEC4). The NEC forms, which replaced the ICE conditions of contract, are modern contracts with equitable allocation of risk designed to stimulate effective management of risk and enable parties to work collaboratively.

What are NEC contracts used for?

NEC contracts can be used for procuring construction work, repair and maintenance activities, professional services and the supply of products. The NEC forms are flexible providing a range of procurement strategies including traditional contracting, design and build, and management contracting. Users also have the option of employing different commercial models including fixed price, target price and cost reimbursable contracts.

Who uses NEC?

NEC contracts are endorsed by the UK Government and are the first choice for central and local government when procuring works and services for civil engineering and infrastructure projects. Some notable users of NEC contracts include Crossrail, Highways England, Heathrow Airport, HS2, Magnox, National Grid, Severn Trent Water, Thames Water and Transport for London.
